"Training, studies and the therapy of tropical diseases" was the motto set by Bernhard Nocht when founding the Hamburg Tropical Institute in 1900. Whilst developing into the Bernhard Nocht Institute of nowadays, these goals remain essential - with research still on top. With approximately 400 people working in Hamburg and Ghana, the Bernhard Nocht Institute is at present the most important research institution for tropical medicine in German. As a National Reference Centre for tropical diseases a great diversity of competence in diagnostics and therapy of tropical medicine as well as in the training of medical staff are required. The Institute's activities are characterised traditionally by an interdisciplinary structure connecting closely basic research, clinics and diagnostics.
