Handicap International

Handicap International (HI) is a non-governmental organization that works specifically with the disabled, whatever the cause of their disability, alleviating their suffering and improving their lives. As co-founder and member of the Steering Committee for the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, Handicap International was co-winner of the Nobel for Peace in 1997.

The three priorities of HI are to:

  • reinforce national capacity to cope with the disabled;
  • support development and integration initiatives;
  • prevent situations that can cause disability.

Handicap International is active in 4 continents, and has set up more than 160 programmes in 50 countries. Having learned of the magnitude of disability due to lymphatic filariasis, it became a member of the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis in April 2001.
