Mectizan™ Donation Program (MDP) is a non-governmental,
non-profit organization based in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. It provides
a secretariat function for the Mectizan Expert Committee which provides
medical oversight for the use of Mectizan in mass treatment programs for
onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis (LF).
The LF section of
the MDP is co-funded by Merck & Co., Inc. and GlaxoSmithKline, pharmaceutical
companies which donate their drugs, Mectizan and albendazole respectively,
for Mass Drug Administration (MDA) against LF, in those African countries
where onchocerciasis is co-endemic. From 2000 - 2006 there were 167.4
million LF treatments approved for 11 African countries, out of which
48.7 million where treated in 2006.
