* Numbers regarding
DEC-alone coverage are provided by country programmes using this strategy Programme Status by Region in 2005
* This number does not include at-risk population of countries that have not yet begun MDA. Four countries that had carried out MDA in previous years were unable to do so in 2004, but were included in this calculation a Benin, Burkina Faso,
Comoros, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Togo, Uganda, United Repubic of Tanzania Definitions Endemic country: A country with any designated administrative areas [implementation units (IUs)] known or reported to be endemic since 1980. At-risk population: Total population in endemic administrative areas [implementation units (IUs)]. At-risk population living in areas with MDA: Total population in endemic areas where mass drug co-administration (MDA) is being implemented. At-risk population covered by drug co-administration: Number of individuals reported to have ingested anti-filarial drugs in the adequate dosage. This number will never equal the population living in areas with MDA because pregnant women, children under two years of age (DEC plus albendazole combination) and children under 90 cm in height (ivermectin plus albendazole), and the very sick are not given drugs. Percentage of at-risk population living in areas with MDA: (The total population in areas with mass drug co-administration divided by the total population of all endemic areas) x 100. Also known as geographic coverage. For more detailed information on programme status, click here. |
