International Skin Care Nursing Group, United Kingdom

Skin Health Through Nursing

The International Skin care Nursing Group (ISNG) is a nursing organisation committed to the promotion of skin health world wide. This overall commitment is achieved through a number of activities which reflect the wide range of skills available within the nursing community. Therefore the ISNG believes it has a vital role in developing:

  • the practical application of nursing skills required for promoting skin health
  • educational resources for pre and post registration nurses
  • research programmes
  • general awareness of the significant impact of compromised skin health from a public health perspective

One of the main challenges facing the ISNG is to facilitate the promotion of skin health through the international nursing community. Whilst there is huge need for skin care, these needs are often unmet. Because of the number of nurses world wide and their skills in care interventions, patient education, counselling and family/community support they are well placed to meet the needs of people with skin health problems. Thus the ISNG is creating an active data base of nurses from all parts of the globe who have an interest in skin health and the provision of skin care. Through these committed individuals the ISNG will support the development of local interest is skin health and ultimately the setting up of local skin care nursing groups.

In order to have a practical and tangible impact the ISNG is currently committed to two major projects. Firstly, as a member of the Global Alliance for the Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis, the group is providing practical advice and support on the disability prevention arm of the programme. Promoting skin health is a key component of the morbidity control and thus disability prevention in LF. At a global level the ISNG works with others to develop strategic advice with relation to disability prevention and at a national level work with Tanzania and Guyana supporting this aspect of their programme.

The second major project is the development of information and educational packages about skin health, on the web. This will provide a valuable resource to all health care professionals (although nurses are the primary target) about how to effectively care for the skin. It is an accepted fact that skin health is not addressed in any detail in pre-registration training and this impacts on professional's ability to provide effective care. In order to tackle the challenges posed by poor skin health, professionals need access to quality education and information. This web based resource will go some way to meeting this need.

The ISNG is based within the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Southampton. It has an active role to play in the Skin Vulnerability Research and Development programme, which forms one of the core research elements of the School's activities. It has an international Advisory Group made up of expert skin care nurses. The group is jointly funded by GlaxoSmithkline and the Department for International Development through the Liverpool Lymphatic Filariasis Support Centre.
