Washington University in St. Louis offers outstanding quality and depth of basic and clinical research opportunities in a fertile collaborative environment. The filariasis research group (led by Dr. Gary Weil and comprised of 5 doctoral level scientists and 4 research technicians) works closely with scientists at the Parasitic Nematode Project and the Microarray Core Facility at the WU Genome Sequencing Center. The WU filariasis group focuses on the development and field application of improved diagnostic tests, on developing improved therapies, and on the basic parasite biology of LF and other filarial nematode diseases. Ongoing WU field studies in Egypt and Papua New Guinea are exploring the value of new tests for monitoring the impact of mass treatment programmes on filariasis prevalence rates and transmission. WU has a mosquito facility for production of B. malayi. They study gene expression in filarial worms and the role of Wolbachia (endosymbiotic bacteria) in filarial biology. |
