Rita graduated MD in 1981 from the University of Atma Jaya and has since worked in the Ministry of Health. Trained in infectious diseases Rita began her career at a Primary Health Center in Jakarta where she received the award for Best Health Center Medical Doctor in 1987. In 1990 she undertook an MSc at the University of Indonesia, majoring in epidemiology and graduating “suma cumlaude predicate”.
From 1993-1998 she was based at the Jakarta Provincial Health Office as Head of Section for Surveillance and working with the National AIDS Commission on AIDs training at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Curtin University in Perth, Australia and John Hopkins University, USA.
Until 2006 Rita worked in the Sub-Directorate of Arboviruses responsible for community empowerment for larvae inspection “POKJANAL” for dengue control in Indonesia. She was a temporary adviser to the Dengue Expert Committee and also participated in many international meetings on dengue as a participant and speaker.
In 2006 Rita became Head of the Sub-Directorate of Malaria and attended national and international meetings for strengthening the Malaria Elimination Programme in Indonesia and was a board member of Asian Collaborative Training Malaria and Asia Pacific Malaria Elimination Network. She participated in the Roll Back Malaria and World Health Assembly meetings in Geneva 2009 and was Vice-Chair of the Indonesian Parasitic Association and Indonesian Mosquitoes.
In February 2009 Rita was appointed as Director of Vector Borne Disease Control with responsibility for the national programmes of filariasis and schistosomiasis, arboviruses, malaria, zoonotic diseases and the vector control programme.
Rita has a special interest in filariasis. She has conducted meetings with experts and participated in controlling and coordinating activities on mapping and mass drug administration in all Indonesia’s districts. She has developed the National Strategy of Filariasis Elimination in Indonesia. She is currently studying for a PhD at the University of Gajah Mada, Indonesia.
